Square FT IQ

Square drivers first hit the scene a couple of years ago, and the shape’s two chief protagonists – Callaway and Nike – are sticking with it for their latest top-of-range models. Nike’s is to be called the STR8 (straight, get it?), more of which in a couple of weeks, while Callaway’s latest is the FT-iQ, available in both standard and Tour versions from mid-October.

This must surely be the first driver inspired by a supercar - the Lamborghini Reventon - and the stealth fighter jet on which that car’s shape was based. The thinking is that while the original FT-i was highly effective at keeping you on the short stuff, its deep face and angular looks perhaps weren’t the most aerodynamically efficient.

I think Callaway has a hit on their hands with this one. Just bought it on Friday and played my first round with it without practice on Sunday. Very forgiving and relatively straight. Most of my straight shots seemed adequately long and as many mentioned, has a lower penetrating ball flight then the ft-i. The sound is a lot less loud then the ft-i too and doesn't bother me at all. My mishits were a few fades and a few hooks. Now mind you the standard model that i have is 1 degree closed and draws biased, but yet 85% seem to go just perfectly straight where you aim. I was able to fade as well as straight push, straight pull. Only when i swung it overly hard and over powered it, is when i hooked it. Not quite duck hook, but almost. Never got into any serious trouble with the club though and the weighting seems really good and overall easy to control. The fubuki shaft feels pretty good, but probably not as good as the speeder in the older ft-i but still a solid shaft. Overall a very nice club, this one is staying in the bag. The head cover seems a little strange, a bit over sided and not the magnetic cover the old ft-i had which i liked.

What do you want from your driver? If you're like most golfers, you want a long, straight drive that splits the middle of the fairway. No need to think, just pick a target and swing away. Enter the FT-iQ driver, the longest and straightest driver that Callaway has ever created.
